Book Whore

About three months ago I started reading G.K. Chesterton’s Orthodoxy and just today I made it to the last chapter. Why did it take so long to get to this point? It’s not a particularly difficult read, although it’s not easy reading either. So, am I a slow reader? Actually, yes, but that’s not why it took so long. Instead, I took so long to get to this point, because I remained true to form regarding my reading habits, which is to always become interested in a handful of other books when ever I become interested in any particular book. In this case, since I first picked up Orthodoxy, I have also began reading the following books:

The Powers That Be, by Walter Wink
Useless Beauty,  by Robert K. Johnston
The Sacred Canopy, by Peter L. Berger
Is the Reformation Over? by Mark A. Noll & Carolyn Nystrom
Traversing Philosophical Boundaries, by Max O. Hallman
The Spiritual Brain, by Mario Beauregard & Denyse O’Leary
The Death of Adam, by Marilynne Robinson

Have I finished any of these other books? No! And, when I think about this, I feel compelled to confess that I must be into mental masturbation, which is to say that I pick up books merely to stimulate neurons, and therefore, if a particular book isn’t “hittin it”, so to speak, I will look around till I find something that does. The whole subconscious drama must be something like this, “Oh yeah book, that is awesome, do that some more, and more, and more, and, and… hmmm, I think I am growing tired of this. Oooooh, look at that over there, that book looks good, let me get my hands on that book.”

I am a book whore!

I realize that I am likely oversexualizing this whole affair, and all of this is just a symptom of my ADD brain, but I have to ask, does anybody else have a tendency to spread themselves thin when it comes to reading habits?

well, not with books. But I find that I do that with recorded TV. Might watch half of the news, then a third of JEOPARDY! then the next next segment of Grey’s Anatomy. But only if my wife’s not around; all that switching, even if she’s not watching, malkes her crazy. Last night, during every football commercial, I watched a segment of The Daily Show or the news.

BTW, I went to a workshop with Walter Wink c 2002; fascinating stuff. Gave me a new perspective on “If you’re asked to go one mile, go two” as non-violent resistance.

Let’s see. I’ve been reading God In Search of Man by Joshua Heschel for about 18 months. I’m also reading:

The Christian Imagination – Leland Ryken
    Resounding Truth – Jeremy Begbie
    Church Next – Eddie Gibbs
All Your Worth – Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi
    The Catch – Gary Myers

Not to mention a couple of short story anthologies. So I guess my answer would have to be yes.
