For years I have had a talent that I kept to myself, but now the time has come for me to share it with the world. I know that the time has come because yesterday, while I was playing a record backwards, I heard a voice tell me that indeed the time has come. And so, as the above transcriptions demonstrate, I have the ability to translate guitar licks into phonics. Go ahead and check it out. In the order that they appear, the above licks that I have transcribed are:

ACDC – Back in Black

SOAD – She’s Like Heroine

Led Zeppelin – Black Dog

As you read the transcription and try to mouth them for yourself, keep in mind that you have to provide the melody. If there is a transcribed part that you don’t understand, or if there is a part you disagree with, just let me know and I would be glad to discuss it with you. Also, I imagine that I am not the only one who has been in the closet about this ability. So, please, come out and share your gift with the world either by transcribing your take on one of the above guitar licks, or by transcribing another guitar lick into phonics. Just remember to identify the name of the band and the song of which you are providing a transcription.

    Funny! 🙂

I have this mental image of you playing an air guitar. That reminds me of a time I saw posters all over the place for an ‘Open air guitar concert.’ Comically I wondered what an ‘Open AIR GUITAR concert’ might look like. 🙂

    Markus Aurelius Lehmanus Caesar,

Damn!!! What’s it been? Over a decade? It’s great to hear from you!

It is very fitting that you should respond to this post as you are one of the architects in my life as far as translating guitar licks into phonics, going back to the days when we would do mock-death metal, with songs like “Mega-Moo” and lyrics like “I’m just a cow – a big, fat, hairy cow!! – spitting up cud from the grass I ate – soon to wind up on your plate!”

I will definitely be dropping you an email.

    Simon,

I saw a brief video the other day about air band contests, where people compete for the best air band performance. It seems kind of cheesy, but it looked like great fun!! And, the performances were really good. I mean some people have there moves and timing down to the nanosecond. In fact, I remember a Scrubs episode where some of the hospital staff were putting together an air band and at the end of the show they did an excellent performance to a song by Boston I believe. If I had more time, and willing friends, I would definitely do this.
